Pumpkin for Halloween

Free pattern from Heklepiken.com (Crochet Girl)

I love to decorate for the holidays with items that I have created and crocheted myself. You can make this pumpkin in different sizes just by using different types of yarn. I’ve used a Norwegian yarn from Sandnesgarn called Alpakka. This is a thin yarn.

I also put a mouth and eyes on my pumpkin to get the proper Halloween feeling.

I often put a crocheted item on this glass table for a holiday, like a small teddy for Valentines day and a easter bunny for easter. Maybe I’ll make a santa for Christmas?

Pattern

You can klick on the pictures for a bigger version. I use US terms in my patterns.

Colors

Sandnesgarn Alpakka. For the pumpkin you can choose between:

  • Gylden oker, 2337 or
  • Oransje, 3318
  • Green: Moss grean, 9573

The pattern will probably go with any yarn since this is crocheted like a ball.

Hook

  • Hook: 3 mm
  • US size: C or D
  • UK number 11

Abbreviation

  • sc: single crochet
  • ch: chain stitches
  • sl st: slip stitches
  • st: stitches
  • r: round

Pumpkin

The pumpkin is crocheted in continuous rounds, not joined rounds. If you join the rounds, you’ll get a «scar» on your pumpkin. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.

Pull it tight together, cut the yarn and weave in the end.

Stem

Crochet the stem in the moss green color.

  1. 7 st in magic sirkel. 7 st
  2. 2 sc in each st. 14 st
  3. – 13. 1 st in each st. 14 st

14. Continue to increase: Crochet *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* Repeat from * to * all the way around your r. 21 st.

15. Crochet *1 sc in each of the next 2 st, 2 sc in next st* Repeat form * to * all the way around your r. 28 st.

16. Crochet *1 sc in each of the next 3 st, 2 sc in next st* Repeat form * to * all the way around your r. 35 st.

17. Crochet *1 sc in each of the next 4 st, 2 sc in next st* Repeat form * to * all the way around your r. 42 st.

18. Crochet *1 sc in each of the next 5 st, 2 sc in next st* Repeat form * to * all the way around your r. 49 st.

  • Continue, without cutting the yarn, and crochet 35 chain stitches. In picture number 1 under, you can see how I just continued with ch st. The chain both starts and ends in the tip where you have increased, se picture number 3 under.
  • When you have crocheted your first 35 ch st, you fasten your last ch st with a sl st in the senter of the bottom of your pumpkin, se picture number 2 under.
  • Ch 35 and skip 6 sc on the stem, se picture number 3 under. Then crochet 1 sl st in each of the next 8 sc, also picture number 3 under.
  • Crochet 35 ch st, fasten with sl st in same place as your first ch, se picture number 2 above. Continue with ch 35 and skip 6 sc on stem and fasten your ch with sl st on the stem.
  • Crochet 1 sl st in each of the next 8 sc on stem. It might look like your ch is too short, but it is supposed to be this way. This is what makes the ball look like a pumpkin. You can now start to pull the stem in the right position, se picture to the right.
  • Crochet 35 ch st and fasten with a sl st in the same st as you fastened your fist ch. See also picture under how the bottom looks like. Crochet 35 ch st and skip 6 sc on the stem and fasten with sl st on stem.
  • Crochet 1 sl st in each of the next 8 sc on stem and ch 35. Fasten your ch with a sl st in the midle under.
  • Now you are supposed to be finished, if not, repeat until you have 7 chains. Cut and weave in end.

This is how the pumpkin looks like under:

If you like, you can make eyes and a mouth on the pumpkin to make a proper Halloween feeling. I used black felt and made a sketch on some paper. I placed the sketch on the felt and fastened it with a pin before I cut it. Fasten the eyes and moth with hot glue.

The pumpkin also looks nice without eyes and a mouth.

I wish you happy crochet and a spooky Halloween 😉👻🎃
