Little ladies for the bathroom

71dd

My grandmother used to make bathroom-dolls, so sooner or later I had to make them too. I’ve had the idea since I started the blog, but there were so many other projects that I wanted to finish first. I started on this one in May last year, but I felt very insecure whether I was able to make a pattern that others could follow, or not.

My grandmother once showed me how to make them, but I have not been able to remember how. I even have an old dress laying arround that she made, but I’m not able to see how she did it. I looked through several books and finally found crossed half double crochet, and this is the closest I’ll ever get.

I found it hard to describe the technique, and even more difficult to translate it to English. I hope that all the pictures make you understands my pattern.

Good luck!

I wish to thank my boyfriend, Arne Otto Myklebust, for lending me his beautiful bathroom for the photos.

Yarn

  • For the lillac dress I used Søstrene Grene: Anna & Claras Cotton nr: 16-3416
  • The blue is made of  Gjestal Cotton Sport: 326
  • White: Gjestal Cotton Sport: 302
  • Crochet hook number 3 mm

Abbreviation

  • ch st: chain stitches
  • ch: chain
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • dc: double crochet
  • sc: single crochet
  • st: stitch
  • r: round

Round 1

  1. Chain 20.
  2. Fasten r with sl st in first ch.
  3. Ch 2 (= 1 hdc)

Round 2

  1. Yarn over.
  2. Put your hook through the second ch st, and yarn over.
  3. Pull the yarn through the ch st, and yarn over your hook.
  4. Put your hook through the next ch st and yarn over again.
  5. Pull the yarn through the ch st. You now have 5 loops on your hook.
  6. Yarn over.23dd
  7. Pull the loop through all 5 loops.
  8. Ch 2.

Repeat from 1 to 8 all the way around. Fasten round with sl st in the first hdc, that is the second ch st on the ch2=1hdc.

Round 3 – 5

Start each round like this:

  1. ch 2.
  2. Yarn over your hook.
  3. Put your crochet hook through the stitch that is on top of the first hdc that is crocheted together. Yarn over.
  4. Pull the yarn through the stitch and yarn over again.
  5. Put your hook through the next st, the one on top of the next hdc that is crocheted together. Yarn over your hook.
  6. Pull the yarn trough the st, now you hav 5 loops on your hook. You see from the picture that I have crocheted in the st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together in the previous round.
  7. Yarn over and pull it through all the 5 loops.
  8. Ch 2.

Continue for the rest of the rounds like this:

60dd

Fasten each round with a sl st in the first hdc (ch2=1hdc). Look at the picture to the left, it is easy to see that the hdc that is crocheted together, starts in the same st as the previous one.

You start each round as I described over, and continue as explained in the last thumbnails.

Round 6

Now you are going to increase for the skirt. In order to do this, you must both crochet in all the ch2-spaces and in all the st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together in the previous round.

  • In picture 1 you can see that I have crocheted in the ch2-space.
  • In picture 2 you can see that I also have crocheted in top of the hdc that is crocheted together.

You do this in round 6.

Round 7

In this round you increase only in every second ch2-space.

  • In picture 1 you see that I have crocheted in the ch-2 space and in the st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together.
  • In picture 2, I skip the ch2-space and crochet in the st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together.

Round 8 to 23

From round 8 to 23 you only crochet in the st that is on top of the hdc that is crocheted together in the previous round. Follow the instructions abowe:

  • «Start each round like this»
  • «Continue for the rest of the rounds like this»

I made 23 rounds, it depends on how large your roll of toilet paper is. The white edgings makes the dress to shrink and I had to add 3 extra rounds after I had made the edgings.

59ddStraps

Fasten your yarn in a st on top of the dress, use a sl st. Ch 12, skip 9 st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 st. Ch 12, skip 9 st and fasten with a sl st beside the first sl st.

Edging on the straps

Use the white yarn. Fasten the yarn with a sl st in the first ch st of the strap. See the picture to the left below.

Ch 3=1dc. Then crochet 1 dc in each of the next 11 ch st, 3 sc in front, and 1 dc in each of the next ch st.

Cut the yarn and start over where you made your ch3=1dc. Ch 3 again. * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st*. Repeat from * to * 4 times. 1 dc in each of the next 5 st. Crochet *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st*. Repeat from * to * 4 times. Cut the yarn and weave in tail.

Switch to silver yarn and make an edging. I made the silver edging with 1 sc in each of the second loop of the dc.

Edges on the skirt

Fasten the yarn with a sl st in the st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together.

Make 1 ch st=1sc.

*5 dc in each ch-2 space, 1 sc in st on top of the hdc that is crocheted together.* Repeat from * to * all the way around. Fasten with sl st. I made 5 edges.

I also made a silver edging. Fasten the silver yarn with a sl st in the second loop of the first dc in any dc group. Ch1=1sc, make 1 sc in each of the next 4 dc, then make a long dc in between the dc groups.  *Make 1 sc in the second loop of each of the next 5 dc, then make a long sc in between the dc groups* Repeat from * to * all the way around.

R 4: *1 sc in each of the next 2 st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat form * to * 7 times.

Contiue in rows:

5-8: Ch 1 = 1 sc, turn your work and make 1 sc in each of the next 19 st. ch 1 and turn. Repeat until you have 4 rows. Cut the yarn and weave in end.

White edging

Fasten the white yarn with a sl st in the first st in the end of the row. *ch 3, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st*, repeat form * to * until you have 10 ch3-spaces.

Make sure that you now look at the inside of the hat, and that the front of the dc turn towards you. Make a sl st in the first ch-3 space, ch 3=1dc, then make 4 dc in the same ch3-space. *Make 1 sc in the sc between the ch3- spaces, 5 dc in the ch-3 spaces*. Repeat from * to * til end of row. Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Silver edging for hat

Ch 30, then fasten the yarn with a sl in the second loop for the first dc. Remember to start from the right and crochet to the left. Crochet 1 sc in each dc and 1 long sc between the dc groups. *1 sc in each second loop of the 5 next dc, 1 long sc in the sc between the dc groups*. Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the edging, ch 30 and fasten the yarn with a tight knot.

You may style your doll as much as you like. My lilac doll got both a hat and a silver belt while the blue one only got the dress.
